The Alternative High School provides an opportunity for students to complete requirements for graduation in a non-traditional classroom. Various class sessions are held throughout the day to accommodate individual work and family schedules. Students work at a pace that meets their individual needs to complete academic credits as outlined by the home school district. Success and achievement is measured through the completion of assignments, unit tests and a final examination for each course. The ultimate reward is a traditional high school diploma from the home school.
The program is a self-contained site which provides a holistic, integrated model of behavioral, academic, and therapeutic services. Program structure and individual interventions are rooted in an understanding of brain-based research and build Resiliency through development of individual protective factors and program-wide positive behavioral supports:
Primary focus is establishing pro-social behavior and addressing risk
and protective factors of students;
Behavior and academic assessment;
Academic teachers provided by Affinity Educational Solutions;
Standardized curriculum aligned with PSSA standards and Chapter 4 requirements;
On-line curriculum used to provide remediation or credit recovery and credit acceleration Virtual Learning Network (VLN);
Emphasis on reading, writing, math, and conflict resolution;
Special education services available for students with IEPs;
Assessment of at-risk students using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and academic benchmarks;
Individualized service plans for each student;
Structured daily schedule and positive staff modeling of responsible behavior;
Pro-social skill development curriculum
